Abstract |
The thesis examined the knowledge management of Karen folk healers, consisting of shamans, herbalists and midwives. The data were collected by observation and interviewing the healers and villagers seeking their treatments.
It is found that the healers were given healing knowledge from their ancestors or the elderly. However, knowledge transmission was informal and unsystematic without group formation. Nevertheless, they shared knowledge among one another. Their treatments emphasized the integration between their beliefs, traditions and culture. It is further found that, due to progress and modernization in the community, young people were not interested in maintaining the traditional lifestyle, making conventional knowledge vulnerable to disappearing in the future.
