Abstract

The thesis attempted to understand political thoughts of ethnic youths residing in Thailand, including Karen, Mon, Arakanese, Kareni, Kachin, Shan, Kayan, and Palaung. These youths were by-products of political conflicts and ethnic strife in Burma. It is found from the study that their political thoughts were derived from a variety of contexts. Politically, these youths were born and raised amidst political conflicts and civil wars in Burma. Ethnically, ethnic strife has been a deep-rooted problem in the country for centuries and has developed into hatred and discrimination among the ethnic groups. Socio-economically, it is expressed in the form of suppression by state agencies, for instance, forced labor, overexploitation of products, or prohibition of instructing ethnic languages. These youths had formed their political thoughts by asking questions about suppression by the Burmese military and trying to answer them. After that, they participated in political movements.

At the social level, these youths absorbed politics through the political environment of Burma, e.g., suppression and discrimination, resulting in resistance to the Burmese governments. At the individual level, the youths were different in historical backgrounds and experiences, e.g., ethnicity, education and work. However, what they had in common was that they were the young generation ready for change and fighting for their rights and for equality. They wanted Burma to become peaceful and sought cooperation and unity among various ethnic groups.
