Abstract |
This thesis examined facial and dental characteristics of Padaung women wearing brass neck coils in Mae Hong Son province by comparing their facial and dental structures from facial measurements and front and side facial photography. The measurement was conducted with Padaung women aged 5-15 years and 15 years and older, who wore and did not wear the coils in an attempt to observe the differences and effects of wearing the coils on the growth of their mandible bones, maxilla and mandible bone formations, and other related structures. The study findings revealed that wearing the coils caused facial and dental differences between the two sample groups. For instance, those wearing the coils were able to open their mouths less, with shorter lower facial part and narrower width of the lower tooth curve. The findings could be applied clinically that using a pressure instrument on the lower mandible bones might be a possible way to correct cases with distinct vertical growth. Wearing the coils causes different facial and dental characteristics because the coils put more pressure on the ribs and lower rim of the mandible bones. Wearing the coils while the mandible bones are still growing makes the growth different from that of non-wearing young women.
