Abstract |
The book deals with the historical background of the Karen ethnic group which is classified in the Tibeto-Burman Family. The group originated in the eastern part of Tibet and migrated to China about three thousand years ago. There, they established a kingdom, known in Chinese as Chow. The kingdom was later invaded by the Chinese and the Karen fled to the Yellow River Plains. However, they were later subdued until they had to move to the Mekong River Plains. They were most concentrated along the Salween River Plains in Burma. The Karen ethnic group in the western part of Chiang Mai, especially in Mae Chaem District, migrated to the area over 200 years ago. They originated from the Salween River Plains. Those settling in Mae Sariang District of Mae Hong Son Province were there about one hundred years ago (pp. 8-13) It is found from the study that the Karen lifestyle respects and incredibly co-exists with nature. They lead a simple life. Their settlement, careers and even their traditions and beliefs are in complete agreement within their communities. They are peace lovers and arts is a part of their lifestyle as expressed in the colors of their traditional dress and weaving. They also like to sing and dance. The author also points out to their being civilized in their matrimonial life, that is, they are monogamous.
