Abstract |
This ethnographic investigation describes the historical background, the physical characteristics of the Karen, and their administrative, socio-economic, cultural, and educational conditions. The village first received assistance from the state to investigate its socio-cultural conditions and other problems. The political problems stem from the remoteness of the village, which is beyond the care of officers. Due to a lack of personnel, the army cannot permanently be stationed there. Villagers’ health problems include sicknesses due to malnutrition, indoor air pollution, hygiene, outdoor work, and wounds or stings caused by insects. Their livelihood problems include a lack of arable land, low production yields and insufficient food supplies. Besides paddy farming and being laborers at local mines, they have no other supplementary careers, resulting in high unemployment rates.
