Abstract |
Traditions and rituals of the Yuan ethnic group at Tha Sao Village were originally derived from their animistic beliefs which were later mixed with their Buddhist beliefs. The beliefs have greatly influenced their peaceful, respectful and grateful lifestyle, contributing to the unity of community members through their traditional practices. Changes of their rituals stemmed from the three generational groups. The elderly group is conservative and conventional, realizing that the rituals have played a less significant role in their microcosmic society. The middle-aged group has opened up to changes and has played a more significant role in their society. Finally, the young group has a different cultural concept, disregarding the significance of their ethnic traditions and rituals. The changes have been caused by socio-economic, biological and geographical factors, opening up to new mentalities and behavior as well as bringing about cultural assimilation. The changes have brought about both positive and negative aspects. In order to maintain the ethnic traditions and rituals, conventional steps have been lessened. In other words, the changes have affected their ethnic behavior and have contributed to the disappearance of certain traditions and rituals. Nevertheless, a strong sense of gratitude and personal responsibility has empowered the ethnic community members to maintain their culture amidst ongoing cultural changes of the outside world (pp. 122-124).
