Abstract |
The Phuthai ethnic group migrated from Sipsongchuthai Region on the eastern bank of the Mekong River. They settled in the northeastern region in Kalasin, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Sakon Nakhon Provinces. This investigation focuses on the Kapong Phuthai in Warichaphum District. The group strongly maintains its ethnic identity regarding language, traditions and customs, kin relationships, acts of gratitude, and respect to their seniors and ancestors. Their settlement background, beliefs in ancestors’ spirits, and their attempts at ethnic revitalization have created a strong ethnic consciousness, system and structure, enabling them to maintain a strong ethnic identity (pp. 7, 24-25).
