Abstract |
The author studied the environmental impact on the health of the Karen at LowerKlittyVillageas a result of heavy metal contamination from a lead mine. The thesis also investigated the suffering and the problems of the villagers through the dimensions of sexology, adjustment and problem solving at individual, family and community levels. The investigation employed a qualitative research approach, participatory observations, in-depth interviews and documentary work on the affected. It was revealed that male and female villagers had knowledge about the environmental impact on their health from direct experience and there was no significant difference in the knowledge of the two genders. Attempts to explain their sicknesses and the impact on their community were carried out in the form of marginalized discourse, reflecting their identity as well as criticisms of the knowledge and power of outside experts who refused to recognize their direct experiences. The villagers developed their social space at various platforms, enabling them to have wider opportunities to interact with other networks in the society.
