Abstract

This investigation was conducted at Phothisan Villages #3 and 4 in Kusuman District, Sakon Nakhon Province. The villages are old communities, over 100 years old. In the old days, there was no contact with the outside world. And because natural resources were abundant, the communities were self-sufficient and there was no need to rely on others. When transportation became convenient, villagers had more contact with others and there were more people working outside their villages, bringing in new technology, particularly toilet. The residents in the two villages have been related through bloodline or through marriage. Living in the same communities is just like relatives. The study findings revealed that kinship was related to the behavior of toilet use. When individuals of the same kinship used toilets, others would follow suit. Other factors related to toilet use included neighborhood, living in the same area, helping others build toilets, and sharing with them whenever one did not have one. Other factors included education, age, gender, income, and contact with the outside world. Those with higher education, higher income, and frequent contact with the outside world tended to accept toilet use easily. Furthermore, those with younger ages tended to accept toilet use faster than those with older ages. The elderly group accepted this behavior the slowest. They only used toilets when it was utmost necessary, for example, whenever they were sick.
