Abstract |
The Lisu believe that illness is caused by sacred, mysterious and supernatural powers existing in the environment. The healing processes include rituals, appeasement, soul calling, and application of medicinal herbs. Sometimes, several methods are used in combination. If the sickness is caused by nature, medicinal herbs are applied. However, when a sickness is caused by supernatural powers, it will become a collective concern, because they are afraid that the sickness could spread at the community level. Family as well as community members look after the sick and provide them moral support.
