Abstract |
This article examined mobility of the Karen ethnic group (particularly Sgaw Karen) in the northwestern part of Chiang Mai province. Two topics on the continuation and change of ethnic mobility were explored: mobility norms based on gender and inter-ethnic relationships and social and regional networks being redefined by the mobility based on gender (p. 289). Mobility trend in the ethnic group changed from mobility for trade to mobility for employment at the regional level. The new trend was mobility to seek educational opportunities and employment in cities. This new trend occured among teenagers, especially teenage girls. In general, social norms restricted mobility of Karen women in their homeland villages, making mobility of women less than that of men. Therefore, an increase in the number of Karen women in cities was a significant change. The norms restricting women mobility did not only reflect the concept of the Karen about inter-ethnic relationships but also defined aspects of the relationships. Moreover, while the norms restricting women mobility continued, women also challenged and violated such norms. With this process, inter-ethnic relationships had been redefined or rescoped (pp. 290, 304).
