Abstract |
The author investigated the Black Tai ethnic group in Laos. The background of the ethnic group was that they originated from Sip Song Chuthai region in northern Vietnam. When the French occupied Vietnam, they called the ethnic group "Black Tai" by the clothes they wore. (In Thailand, the group is known as Lao Song). The ethnic identity could be observed from their lifestyle, livelihood, customs, traditions, and rituals. The author described cultural aspects that were a part of their ethnic identity, such as, dress, family and kinship systems, community characteristics, social status, courting practices and marriages, and rituals related to birth, death, healing and appeasement of ancestral spirits.
