Abstract |
The book describes the lifestyles of Sea Gypsies on various islands in the southern region of Thailand, such as Adang island in Satun Province, Lanta Island in Krabi Province, Siray Island in Phuket Island and Ban Thai Mai in Thaymuang District of Phang Nga Province. In the past, this ethnic group led a nomadic life on boats. The group set up temporary settlements on beaches and moved on when resources in local seas became depleted. Their living conditions, livelihood and health care were poor. Their children were undernourished and did not attend school. Nowadays, their living conditions are getting better with more permanent settlements and better health care.
