Abstract |
The thesis investigated the processes of migration into Thailand of Mon Burmese laborers to rubber plantations of Surat Thani Province, their lifestyles after migration and their socio-economic and cultural adaptations. In-depth interviews and participatory observations were used to collect the data. It was found that major factors driving them from Burma included poverty, internal wars, better economic prospects in Thailand, and having relatives in Thailand. Regarding their forms of adaptation, the laborers were economically well adapted as they could send remittances back to their families. Socially, they did not adapt much since there was a large number of Mon Burmese in the area and interaction with local people was limited. Culturally, the form of adaptation included using the Thai language to communicate with local people, whereas it took a long time to adapt regarding dress and food.
