Abstract |
It is found that the nomadic hunting-gathering lifestyle of the Sakai ethnic group changed to a rice cultivating semi-permanent existence for a while, and then changed back to a nomadic lifestyle. The behavior was in conflict with the theory of Unilateral Evolution of Charles Darwin, which states that human society has simple origins and becomes more complicated. The author asserted that the phenomenon could be explained by the cultural ecology concept of Julian Steward, stating that the ecological system plays an important part in the formation of culture. It was seen from the Sakai ethnic group that when the group was unable to adapt to the new cultural environment, it returned to its conventional lifestyle.
