Abstract

Huay Luang village is a large community, receiving beneficial and continuous developments from both state and private sectors. Thus, the village has been progressive in many aspects. The ethnic musical culture has been passed down from generation to generation. Most of the songs are used for dancing. The ethnic group regards that music and dance are inseparable. The most important is music and dance during the ethnic New Year Festival. An analysis of the music played during this festival revealed that the major instrument to lead the melody is the “Nor”, a woodwind instrument with five notes: Sol, La, Ti, Do and Re. The instrument consists of three parts: the body made from a gourd, five pipes and a mouthpiece. The construction materials and instruments had been available locally. The nature of the ethnic music is lively with one musical structure being played repeatedly. Each piece consists of melody, chorus and rhythm, and players are free to create pitches different from the original by means of breath control. The beginning and ending melodies are different from those in othe parts of the piece. Musical instruments are composed of a drum, a gong and a pair of cymbals. Rhythmic patterns are the same in the entire piece. Lahu music reflects an equal socio-cultural structure and entertainment in rituals, creating unity in the community and entertainment in the society. Music plays a vital part in the New Year ritual, the most important ritual of the ethnic group.
