Abstract |
This work investigated historical backgrounds, traditions, and societies of the Phu Tai in Phananikhom District and the So in Kusuman District, Sakon Nakhon Province. The ancestors of both ethnic groups originated from the left bank of the Mekong River before migrating to the province. From investigating their historical backgrounds, it was found that the two ethnic groups have always shared historical backgrounds, like land contestation in the past. Various kinds of evidence have indicated that the Phu Tai had better livelihoods than the So did in various aspects, such as settlement. Moreover, the two ethnic groups have been different in terms of language, culture, and belief systems. The So migrated to Kusuman District well before the Phu Tai did to Phananikhom District. Kusuman District was later upgraded to a city status with its own rulers under the supervision of Sakon Nakhon in 1844.
