Abstract |
There were three important components in assessing the sufficiency of rice: average yields of lowland and highland cultivated rice; rice cultivation areas and change of rice cultivation areas; and needs for food consumption and adaptation methods of farmers on the problem of rice shortages (p. 11). The areas for lowland rice cultivation increased from 74.1 hectares (2.49% of the total area) in 1954 to 148.2 hectares (4.98%) in 1983 and to 205.56 hectares (6.92%) in 1994 (p. 43). Farmers tried various methods in dealing with the rice shortage problem. It was found that 87% sought jobs outside the farming sector, 65% borrowed rice from the rice banks, 51% sold their livestock, 47% borrowed rice from their relatives, and 43% were involved in cash crop cultivation (p. 51).
