Abstract |
The Khmu, or Lao Therng as they are officially called in Laos, is the largest ethnic minority group in Laos. The group has mostly settled in Luang Phrabang, Xiangkhwang, Pongsali, Nam Tha, Pak Beng, and Huay Sai. In Thailand, the group is found in the northern region, particularly in the Thai-Lao border areas of Chiang Rai and Nan. Its settlements can also be found in the northeast and central regions, for instance Nong Khai, Karnchanaburi and Uthai Thani. Most Khmu are animists, Buddhists or Christians. The spirits involved in their life are forest spirits, house spirits, water spirits, and village spirits. It is believed that the Roi Kang House Spirit dwells at the cooking stove of every house. To prevent diseases and to heal sicknesses among the Khmu, two indigenous approaches are used: herbal medicine and rituals. “Tood Lamern” leaves are crushed or boiled for better blood circulation and for skin diseases, while the roots are boiled to cure headaches. Rituals related to supernatural powers are good for morale boosting and encouragement to fight sicknesses. Rituals are verbal and non-verbal symbols that provide patients with psychological comfort. For instance, the use of “Chalaew” as a demarcation line symbolizes a forbidden area for evil spirits and animals. Reciting mantras expresses strong determination to conduct good deeds as a promise to supernatural beings. These rituals help to create will power to make things better. It is required for the rituals that animals be slaughtered as sacrificial offerings. Diagnosis and healing techniques are performed by shamans who are able to communicate with the spirits to identify causes of illnesses.
