Abstract |
Tai Yo men and women of marriage age are free to choose their life partners. The steps in the marriage tradition start from selecting a partner, informal contact, formal request, engagement and finally marriage. After engagement, marriage must be carried out within three months. The marriage ceremony takes place in the even lunar months at the bride’s house, but not in the eighth lunar month which is during the Buddhist Lent. Divorce is rare because the society is monogamous. When family problems occur, the couple’s consultants will provide advice and make decisions. The marriage tradition of the Tai Yo in the area of investigation is strictly based on conventional beliefs. It is believed that if the marriage steps are followed, couples will have a happy married life.
