Abstract |
The report investigated beliefs, traditions and treatments related to Yao Rituals as well as studied the roles of Yao shamans in the Phu Thai ethnic group in Nong Sung District of Mukdaharn Province. It is found that Yao shamans have existed for a long time because the ritual is a morale booster to fight against illnesses. The ritual is full of intent from the dazzling dress of shamans, holy appeasement items to the real actions of mediums. It is morale boosting for community members to heal patients. Yao shamans are selected by spirits, working without pay. They are unable to refuse requests to perform the ritual. They act as physical and spiritual healers entrusted by community members. However, some Yao shamans are not accepted by community members.
