It is with great pleasure that the Committee of the Seventh International Conference on Hani/Akha Culture (ICHAC) announces that the seventh ICHAC will convene from June 10th to June 16th, 2012 in Yuanjiang Hani, Yi and Dai Nationalities County of Yuxi Municipality, Yunnan Province of the People’s Republic of China. We look forward to scholars of Hani/Akha Culture from home and abroad participating in this grand conference in Yuanjiang County, the hearth and home of the Hani minority.
BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE PRECEDING SYMPOSIA
The Hani Minority is a cross-border ethnic group with a population of over 2,200,000 people, who are distributed in southwest China, Burma, Laos, Thailand and northern Vietnam. Along with a long history, the Hani people have created a distinctive traditional culture featuring terrace culture and mountain agriculture that have made great contributions to the multi-cultural development of the whole world. The International Conference on Hani/Akha Culture (ICHAC), co-organized by Honghe Prefecture Minority Research Institute and Yunnan University, held its first meeting in Gejiu City, Yuanyang County and Jianshui County of the Honghe Hani and Yi Minorities Autonomous Prefecture in 1993.
Later symposia were held with great success and positive effects in Chiangmai Province and Chiangrai Province of Thailand in 1996; Jinghong, capital city of Xishuangbanna Prefecture in 1999; Yuanyang County and Honghe County of Honghe Prefecture in 2002; Mojiang County of Puer Municipality in 2005; and Luchun County of Honghe Prefecture in Yunnan Province of the People’s Republic of China in 2008.
Decided by the Committee of the Sixth International Academic Symposium on Hani/Akha Culture, and consented by the Yuxi Municipal People’s Government, The Seventh International Academic Symposium on Hani/Akha Culture will be held from June 10th to June 16th, 2012 in Yuanjiang County of Yuxi Municipality, Yunnan Province of the People’s Republic of China. We warmly welcome you to participate in the seventh conference which is a continuation of the preceding six ones, promising extensive discussion on the Hani/Akha culture in China and Southeast Asia. Further details of the seventh conference are as follows:
Aims
1. To offer an opportunity for all scholars studying Hani/Akha culture, and other ethnic cultures from around the world, to learn and exchange ideas, establish academic contacts and promote Hani/Akha cultural development.
2. To strengthen collaboration and friendship among scholars and promote construction and development of the harmonious world.
3. To broaden and deepen the inheritance, conservation and research activities of traditional Hani/Akha regional culture; to explore opportunities, challenges and related measures, and better promote social and economic development in the Hani/Akha region.
4. To introduce Yuanjiang County to the broader world by featuring its colourful and distinctive ethnic culture, natural landscape and social customs. Let the world understand Yuxi. Let Yuxi march on in the world.
Topics
To participate in the conference, scholars are invited to present an academic paper on any of the following topics.
1. To explore opportunities, challenges and solutions in the cause of establishing a prosperous and harmonious society and constructing a New Socialist Countryside in the Hani/Akha regions.
2. To study eco-conservation and construction in the Hani/ Akha regions.
3. To research the origin and migration history of the Hani/Akha people.
4. To research the history of the Hani Luopang Kingdom in Yuanjiang, its prosperity and decline, as well as the paramount position of the Hani people in human history.
5. To research problems and issues concerning the inheritance and development of Hani traditional culture and related measures.
6. To research problems related to tourism and cultural industry in the Hani/Akha regions.
7. To research the standardization and popularization of the Hani/Akha writing system.
8. To research the creation of Hani/Akha arts and literature.
Participant Fees
1. Each scholar presenting paper is required to pay USD 400, which covers accommodation, transportation and excursions during the symposium.
2. Each non-presenting foreign colleague or relative of a scholar is required to pay USD300.
3. Each foreign participant working or student studying in Yunnan Province is required to pay RMB1000
