Abstract |
The Karen farmers at Mae Lan Kham Village conduct integrated agriculture, shifting rice cultivation and establishing orchards. The cycle of shifting cultivation has shortened from 7-12 years to 3-2 years. Single crop cultivation and orchards have been introduced by state and private sectors in the hope that there might be a reduction in shifting rice cultivation and agricultural land expansion. One important result of the practice is that household rice consumption is insufficient due to land appropriation for the Ob Khan National Park and the cultivation of single crops and fruits. The factors affecting the changes in the highland rice production process of the villagers include a less productive eco-system, climate change, the reduction of water and arable land, and labor shortages. The villagers solve the rice production problems by growing single crops and fruits, regulating and managing labor, and establishing new regulations in their community.
