Abstract |
Mon at Bang Khan Mak Village is a register language and registers are a distinct characteristic as well as generate more consonants and vowels than other languages in other language families. There are two sets of monophthongs but no tones because pitches are not significant at the phonemic level. It is a monosyllabic language and there are major and minor syllables. The syllables can be either open or checked like other languages. The mid level pitch is not usually spoken and syllables receive different registers and rhythms. Three notes were derived from this investigation. Firstly, the Mon language at the study area is a register language, generating sufficient phonemes and words for use. Secondly, it is not a tonal language but registers are used instead to generate sufficient phonemes and words. Finally, Mon is different from Thai, but it is similar in that it is a monosyllabic language and the syntactic structure is subject + verb + object.
