Abstract |
Cultural aspects of the Karen ethnic group in the study areas are complicated amidst the dynamism of historical and social changes, especially after the construction of Bhumibol Dam in Sam Ngao district, Tak province. Furthermore, changes due to the effects of international politics have brought about trans-border migration of the ethnic group and refugee centers have been established to accommodate these migrants along the borders of Tak and Mae Hong Son provinces. These circumstances have affected the ethnic ecology-oriented wisdom that has encountered forest and lowland transitions, and have also impacted their beliefs leading to different group formations as a result of previous socio-historical processes. Moreover, international political contexts have obliged the ethnic group to negotiate for farmland and resettlement due to farmland policies and development in forest areas in Thailand. Problems of the ethnic group in the study areas are complicated and interesting to further investigate in order to better understand the situations this ethnic group has been through.
