Abstract |
The objective of this qualitative research was to analyze aspects of cultural capital for community development of the Thai Song Dam ethnic group at Koh Rat village, Bang Pla sub-district, Bang Len district, Nakhon Pathom province. It was found that the ‘capital’was essentially the cultural values of the ethnic group, which could be classified into five categories: residence and lifestyle; livelihood; dresses, clothing and ornaments; healthcare; and religion and beliefs. These cultural aspects were implicitly expressed through the body, objects and creation, and were developed differently according to demographic changes, contacts with other societies, exposure to others’cultural capitals, and community natural resources in each period. Thus, the community was obliged to change its cultural capital in response to the needs in each period. At present, this capital is ready to become a development force to drive the community to prosperity and happiness. If properly maintained and developed by the state and concerned agencies, the capital could be used as a community development tool in order to achieve its objectives based on actual public participation.
