Abstract |
This documentary and fieldwork research examined the beliefs and legends about Chao Mae Song Nang in 13 communities along the Mekong River in Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Nong Khai, Bung Kan, Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan provinces from 2007 to 2011. The research also explored the role of the religious rituals that appease and glorify the deity. The study findings revealed that there were 22 legends divided into 15 oral forms and 7 written forms. The rituals were composed of symbols indicating the status of the deity that provided prosperity, wealth, safety and morale to community members.
