Abstract |
This work examined the Muslim community on Koh Pan Yi island located in the Phang Nga Marine National Park, and is considered an important tourist attraction. Before 1977, the community was involved in subsistence fishing and they had led a simple life. After 1977, this island community was developed by concerned state agencies as a famous tourist attraction, drastically changing the way of the community life. One clear change was that the community was divided into two parts. The firstpart was the commercial area. This group adapted to tourism, with restaurants, souvenir shops and boats for tourists to hire. This development brought with it consumerism, individualism and business orientation. The second part, called the backyard group, maintained their subsistence lifestyle, adhering to their religious teachings and being good role models for young people to become religious. They were more interested in their identity in order to turn against the tourism development trend and prevent young people from becoming materialistic, so that they would not forget to do good deeds for the peaceful existence of the community.
