Abstract |
The focus of this investigation was on the livelihood and lifestyle of the Kachin ethnic group at Ban Mai Samakhee Village, Chiang Mai Province, as well as those in Thailand. The ethnic group settled into a community under the supervision of the Royal Project.
It was found that the Kachin are not categorized as a hill tribe and are without the right to have Thai citizenship. They are regarded as a cultural group in Chiang Dao District, leading a farming lifestyle in accordance with the policies of the Royal Project. Despite having no rights of land ownership, and forbidden to leave their area of residence without permission and to seek employment outside their area, the ethnic group is able to form into a group and create a network to seek help and solve their problems, such as citizenship. The network is in contact with Kachin in Burma, Christian networks, and other non-governmental organizations.
Additionally, the ethnic group is able to use their culture as a tourist attraction, to get support from concerned agencies, and to connect their identity with their homeland.
