Abstract |
The study focuses on negotiating for space, the social status and identity of Shan migrants along the Thai-Burmese border, and on the socio-political livelihood of the migrants.
It was found that the migrants formed into groups with a shared lifestyle, religious practices, and displaced experiences. Although the migrants living in Thailand had to obey Thai laws and could not participate in political movements freely, they were able to perform cultural and religious activities and use them as their space in Thai society. These activities together with new technology, such as television and radio, are the media connecting the migrants with their homeland in Shan State.
