Abstract |
This investigation examined the data of textile used as dress of the Pow Karen ethnic group residing in the study area, which included Tambon Lowo in Sangkhlaburi District and Tambon Khaojot in Srisawat District, Kanchanaburi Province; Tambon Suan Phung and Tambon Ban Kha in Suan Phung District, Ratchaburi Province; and Tambon Wang Yao in Dan Chang District, Suphanburi Province. The investigation covered utilization, raw materials, designs, weaving techniques, and use of the ethnic textile. It was found that the traditional ethnic dress is mostly worn by older generations whereas younger generations prefer to wear modern and fashionable dresses similar to what lowlanders do. The latter would wear traditional dress only in important festivals and rituals. Additionally, clothes and other utensils are categorized according to their use, such as male and female dresses, sarongs of various types, blankets, head scarves, and shoulder bags. These clothing items are implicitly labeled for use in the appropriate occasion, in other words, whether they are for daily use or for rituals.
